Man Set Off Explosive Device On Atlantic City Sidewalk, Police Say

An Atlantic City man was accused of setting off an explosive device downtown, authorities said.

Stacy Thomas, 38, was arrested on Wednesday, July 10, the Atlantic City Police Department said in a news release. An officer saw an explosion on a sidewalk on the 1500 block of Atlantic Avenue at around 2:03 a.m.

The officer saw someone running from the area but first went to the explosion site to see if there were any victims. No one was injured and no buildings were damaged.

Police found surveillance video showing the suspect who was the man seen running from the explosion. Another officer found Thomas in the 1100 block of Arctic Avenue just before 4 a.m.

Investigators said Thomas put four butane canisters on the sidewalk before lighting a fuse. He was charged with arson, unlawful possession of a destructive device, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.

Thomas was held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
